SEOUL JJIMDAK - Food Review
My love for Korean cuisine began when I started watching kdramas! Whenever I see the actors feast from the pipping hot pot of army stew I wished I could join them too.
Seoul Jjimdak is a restaurant located at level 5 of City Square Mall, right beside Golden Village Cinema. I love how the walls are filled with posters. Song Joong Ki this time!
Signature Seoul Jjimdak [$33.90]
I highly recommend this dish. The chicken is braised till perfectly tender and succulent. The potatoes are very soft and delicious as it has soaked up the flavourful chicken braising sauce. Ingredients were served raw and the waitress would prepare the meal in front of you. This would ensure that the noodles were not soaked for too long.
The Jjimdak comes with the chicken, of course, soft potatoes, cucumbers and chewy glass noodles. Additional toppings such as prawn & mussels [$5.90], mozzarella cheese [$2.90] or a bowl of steamed white rice [$1.50] could also be added to your jjimdak. I personally think that adding cheese to the jjimdak would increase the umami of the dish.
"Mini" Boneless Jjimdak [$12.90]
If you think that the generous pot of jjimdak (serves 2-3 pax) is too much for you, Seoul Jjimdak also comes in a mini size which is perfect for you to enjoy it yourself!
Army Stew [$33.90]
I guess everyone is very familiar with this dish! This home-made kimchi stew consist of pork belly strips, luncheon meat, assorted vegetables and tofu. Adding tteokbokki [$2.90] or ramyeon [$2.90] makes the classic dish even more satisfying. The kimchi broth provides a mild acidity which made this dish very appetising.
Ingredients will be cut by staff members of Seoul Jjimdak! All you have to do is to enjoy your food.
Seafood Pancake [14.90]
Thin, crispy pancake is the way to go! I hate Korean pancakes which are soggy, just like those in commonly serve in buffets. The pancake itself is quite plain, so don't forget to dip it in the dipping sauce!
Spicy Cheese Tteokbokki [$11.90]
The tteokbokki (korean rice cakes) are pleasingly chewy. Be assured that the twangy texture would not tire your jaw. The cheese adds extra flavour while reducing the spiciness of the rice cakes. If you cannot take any spiciness, there's a Royal Court Tteokbokki [$9.90] which is covered in sweet sauce. However, I did not get the chance to try it. Perhaps you could tell me how it's like after your visit there! ^^
Kimchi Tofu Soup [$9.90]
I love their kimchi soup! It is sightly sweet, not extremely sour (some places one is too sour for me) yet the spicy level is there. Just order a bowl of rice to accompany the soup and your lunch is settled.
Yakult Soju [$20.90]
I've heard of Yakult Soju before, but this is actually my first time trying this drink, and I love it! It is sweet, as the yoghurt yakult masks the bitter taste of soju. Suitable for anyone who wants a booze but dislike the taste of alcohol.
Yuja (Citron) Soju [$20.90]
This yuja soju is super refreshing! 1 jug of soju has around 1L which is reasonably enough for 2-3 pax.
Japchae [$12.90]
For those harbour the mindset thinking that Korean foods are spicy, I am please to correct you! The next few dishes that I'm sharing with you are kid-friendly! You can bring your kids, younger siblings or even friends that can't take spicy stuff here too! This Japchae for example, is a kid-friendly dish. There might be slices of chili in it but they are just for garnishing purposes. Japchae is also a very healthy dish for your health conscious friends out there. It is loaded with healthy vegetables!
Steamed Egg [$9.90]
Korean steam egg is different from the usual steam egg we cook. It is surprisingly soft and fluffy! I wonder what's their secret.... hmmm. However, I find the portion a 'lil too large. Korean cuisine is different from the zi char we're familiar with, so this huge portion (same size as the kimchi soup) is too much for my family and I to share. But if you're an egg lover, then this will be a wonderful dish for you and your family or friends!
Chicken Karaage [$9.90]
Tell me who does not love fried chicken? If they don't, I will be happy to eat their share!/They can give their serving to me! HAHAHA As much as I love chicken karaage, I feel that it is a bit overpriced for a portion of 6 pieces.
Melona Soda Drink [$5.90]
Sprite float with a twist! This Melona soda drink is a NEW creation. It is not even on the menu yet! Just point to the small notice on the wall and the staff will know what you want. There are 4 ice-cream flavours to choose from! I tried the mango flavoured drink.
Seoul Jjimdak provides free and refillable banchan (appetizers) for all customers! I personally like the pickled cucumbers a lot. Their kimchi is quite good too!
THERE IS FREE WIFI THERE! Let me give you a hint, the password is their unit number x2.

To sum it up, I really enjoyed the food at Seoul Jjimdak. Especially the korean braised chicken (Jjimdak), which is not commonly found in Singapore. The portion of the foods is generally large, so if you’re looking for good food and great value, I highly recommend you check out Seoul Jjimdak!
